The Group’s Own Projects
Our practical conservation work focuses on the two spare Class 58 cab shells. The Group also preserves photographs, documents, technical records and artefacts, and shares the Class 58 story through publications, displays and events.
58016: The Group’s Earlier Involvement
In 2010, a consortium including the Class 58 Locomotive Group purchased 58016 for preservation. The Group held a one-fifth share and acted as custodian. The consortium agreed the sale to Edward Stevenson in 2023. He purchased 58016 with the intention of returning it to commercial work.
The locomotive’s future plans are now a matter for its owner. It is not a Group restoration project.
Recording the Wider Class 58 Story
Our historical records cover the whole fleet and its surviving examples. Research, photographs, technical documents and personal memories help us explain the class’s place in British railway history.
