CLASS 58 LOCOMOTIVE GROUP TO SUPPORT DONCASTER WORKS CELEBRATION EVENT
The Class 58 Locomotive Group is pleased to confirm its support for the forthcoming Doncaster Works Celebration Event, taking place on Saturday, 20th June 2026 at the historic Doncaster Works site.
Organised by Wabtec UK in partnership with the City of Doncaster Council, the event will celebrate the extraordinary engineering legacy of Doncaster Works and the generations of railwaymen and women whose skill and dedication helped shape Britain’s railway industry.
As one of the supporting rail heritage groups attending the event, the Class 58 Locomotive Group is proud to be involved in what promises to be a significant and emotional occasion for both the Railway and the wider Doncaster community.
The event will bring together a unique collection of locomotives spanning several generations of British railway engineering, including the world-famous Flying Scotsman, Sir Nigel Gresley, and preserved examples of Class 37s, 56s and 58s. For supporters of the Class 58, the event offers a rare opportunity to see one of British Rail’s final diesel locomotive classes represented at the very works where the locos were constructed during the 1980s.
The Class 58s hold a particularly important connection with Doncaster Works. Built between 1982 and 1987, the fleet represented one of British Rail Engineering Limited’s final major locomotive construction programmes at Doncaster and symbolised a new era of modern freight traction for the railway industry. Today, preserved members of the Class continue to represent an important chapter in the town’s engineering heritage.
Paul Fuller, Chairman of the Class 58 Locomotive Group, said:
“Doncaster Works occupies a special place in British railway history, and particularly in the story of the Class 58. The locos were constructed here during the closing years of locomotive building at ‘The Plant’, making this event especially significant to our members and supporters.
We are extremely proud to support Wabtec UK and City of Doncaster Council in celebrating the people, engineering achievements and railway heritage associated with this historic site. Events such as this are vital in ensuring future generations understand the importance of Doncaster’s contribution to Britain’s railways.”
In addition to locomotive displays and heritage exhibits, the event will feature museum-style displays, railway memorabilia, live demonstrations, family entertainment and exhibits from a variety of preservation groups and railway organisations.
The event also forms part of the wider Gresley150 celebrations, commemorating 150 years since the birth of Sir Nigel Gresley, one of Britain’s most influential locomotive engineers.
The Class 58 Locomotive Group encourages members, supporters and railway enthusiasts to attend what is expected to be one of the standout railway heritage events of 2026.
The Class 58 Locomotive Group will be on-site with a large range of sales items and memorabilia throughout the event.
Tickets will be available via Eventbrite from 10:00 am on 11th May 2026.
